I first saw August Wahh perform at Boogie MNL back in early 2019 (in the beforetimes), but I’d seen her name associated with some of my favorite acts long before that - collaborating with local luminaries like crwn and bp valenzuela, opening for Daniel Caesar and Erykah Badu. So when I saw that she was doing a set, I made a point to stop by and finally check her out. Needless to say, she was amazing (!!) - both DJing and singing with live trumpet accompaniment by Roderick Camarce, who’s provided horns for so many incredible musicians. I’m so excited that she’s been steadily releasing music since then and to be able to share her latest video on Hella Pinay.

Born and raised in the militarized General Santos City in Mindanao, August moved to Manila in 2007 to pursue her passion collaborating with a diverse selection of musicians. In her songwriting, she draws upon her experiences growing up around “nature and danger”, finding inspiration in the synergy of chaos and serenity.

August’s first release of 2021, “Woo Woo”, is an ode to intuition and trusting in the process. Produced by Manila-based Asch, the jazzy, soulful track is about manifesting - setting intentions into the universe, not latching on too tightly to desired outcomes - and doing the work. She shares that she chose “Woo Woo” as the title “because it’s used as a low-key derogatory word for spiritual curiosities. People use it to make fun of faith, as if it was weird to talk about higher intuition. To me, Woo Woo essentially is placing that trust within yourself that the universe will provide. I’m sure there’s other words for it, but Woo Woo’s fucking catchy.”

Produced by Anak!Ng Studios and shot in the hills of Antipolo, the music video shows August in her element in the sunshine and fresh air, blissful in the idea of “chilling with intention”. It reminds us that all is well and all will be well, if we just let it.
